Product Overview: Hoses for the Automotive Industry

Consultancy and development for bespoke hose systems

APT’s fluoropolymer hoses are synonymous with the highest purity, excellent chemical resistance and exceptional temperature stability. Thanks to state-of-the-art extrusion technology, APT manufactures hoses from high-quality materials such as PTFE, PFA, FEP, ETFE, ECTFE, PVDF and THV – precisely tailored to the requirements of a wide range of industries. In biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical applications, hose systems must not only be technically capable but also designed to meet regulatory requirements. PTFE and PFA hoses should therefore be assessed in terms of purity, chemical suitability, temperature resistance, documentation and application-specific compliance.

It is crucial that the hose system (which can also be customised) can be reliably integrated into sensitive processes and supports both product quality and process reliability in the long term. Particularly in chemical and pharmaceutical environments, a material- and application-specific design is therefore a key factor for success.

The requirements for hose systems in biopharmaceuticals, fluid systems, and storage and cooling systems are high and often highly specific. That is why the Masterflex Group supports its customers every step of the way, from requirements analysis through material selection to the development of bespoke system solutions. This results in safe hose solutions for the chemical and pharmaceutical industries that not only impress in terms of chemical and thermal performance, but also function reliably in complex plant environments and can be seamlessly integrated into existing processes.

Hoses are better than stainless steel pipework for the food, pharmaceutical and biotech sectors

Before a product such as a vaccine, a tablet, a dairy product or a microchip is completed, it usually goes through numerous process steps in complex industrial plants. The journey takes the product through kilometres of hose lines and piping systems with numerous connection points – from tank farms, through reactors and fermenters, to downstream processing. Pumps move the fluid flows, valves control them precisely, whilst sensitive sensors monitor the processes. In unit operations and process equipment, the media are further processed until the end product is finally ready for sterile filling or controlled dispensing. For pure performance, we support our customers as a reliable supplier and development partner throughout the entire value chain.

Frequently Asked Questions about Masterflex Group PTFE, FEP and PFA hose solutions

  • Is it possible to mark or laser-engrave PTFE and PFA hoses?

Yes, we do offer laser-marked fluoropolymer hoses with continuous marking. Whilst hoses made from engineering plastics such as PE or PA are usually marked, this is often not done when fluoropolymers are used, as conventional printing processes simply do not adhere to fluoropolymers. A new laser marking technology now enables marking of impressively high quality. In terms of the printed image, not only text but also logos or safety markings can be printed with razor-sharp clarity.

  • What are the manufacturing processes used for your fluoropolymer hoses?

APT utilises state-of-the-art production facilities to carry out conventional extrusion, co-extrusion and paste extrusion of PTFE, enabling it to manufacture high-precision, application-specific tubing solutions with the highest levels of dimensional accuracy and functionality.

  • What are PTFE, FEP and PFA hoses?

PTFE, FEP and PFA hoses are high-performance plastic hoses made from fluoropolymers, which are characterised by high chemical resistance, temperature resistance and excellent purity, making them ideal for demanding media and process applications. Our specialist within the Masterflex Group is APT, based in Düsseldorf.

  • For which applications are PTFE or PFA hoses suitable in the pharmaceutical industry?

PTFE and PFA hoses are particularly suitable in the pharmaceutical industry for high-purity, chemically aggressive and temperature-sensitive media in applications such as fluid transfer, filling, bioprocessing, CIP/SIP cleaning, analytical and sterile production environments, as well as in single-use systems and pump, valve and dosing lines, or in the high-purity semiconductor front-end.

  • What are the advantages of PFA tubing?

PFA tubing offers, above all, very high chemical resistance, high purity, temperature stability and a long service life, making it ideally suited to demanding processes in the chemical, pharmaceutical, semiconductor and laboratory sectors. APT distinguishes between standard PFA tubing, designed to meet the highest demands for reliability and durability, and high-purity PFA tubing with a particularly low concentration of extractable substances in accordance with SEMI F57-0301, for highly critical applications in the semiconductor, photovoltaic, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.

  • When are FEP hoses the right solution?

FEP tubing is ideal for conveying media used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, where transparency, controlled media flow and ease of integration into plant systems are required. It is frequently used in applications where process visibility and clean handling are important.

  • What is the minimum diameter for APT FEP hoses?

APT manufactures FEP tubing with internal diameters ranging from a minimum of 0.10 mm to a maximum external diameter of 100 mm. In addition to a wide range of standard dimensions, which we keep in stock, we can produce almost any customised dimensions; on request, these can also be coloured in accordance with the RAL colour chart.

  • When is a PTFE hose recommended?

A PTFE hose is particularly recommended for applications involving high chemical and thermal stress. For example, in a production laboratory. Where media are corrosive or processes operate under demanding temperature conditions, PTFE provides a particularly robust material base.

  • Is it possible to get custom-made PTFE hoses?

APT manufactures PTFE hoses with internal diameters ranging from a minimum of 0.30 mm to a maximum external diameter of 20 mm. In addition to a wide range of standard dimensions, which we hold in stock, we can produce almost any customised dimensions; on request, these can also be coloured in accordance with the RAL colour chart.

  • Are there also bespoke solutions available?

Yes, bespoke solutions can be developed to meet individual system requirements. This includes, for example, special connection solutions, customised geometries, specific material combinations or complex fluid systems for research, development and production.

  • What is the most important factor when it comes to hoses for fluid systems?

It always depends on the specific requirements. As a general rule, the most important factors for hoses used in fluid systems are resistance to the fluids, purity, pressure and temperature resistance, and consistently reliable and safe process performance.

  • Why are PTFE and PFA hoses suitable for substances that react with metals?

Because they can be designed for inert and media-compatible applications, thereby reducing the risk of interactions with sensitive substances. This makes them particularly suitable for sensitive chemical and pharmaceutical processes.
